Game Freak Discusses Pokémon Design Methods

Game Freak

Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda (Director, Producer, & Composer of the Pokémon series) was recently interviewed by Game Informer. During their discussion, Mr. Masuda went into a bit of detail on how the team comes up with designs for new Pokémon. He said they get inspiration from lots of different people and places. Sometimes it’s not even the graphic designers who come up with the ideas. A battle sequence might need a new Pokémon or perhaps a part of the story has the need for one. Here’s the full quote regarding this.

“The graphic designers are obviously going to be the ones finalizing the look, but it’s not just the graphic designers who come up with ideas or draw the Pokémon. These ideas come from a lot of different places, the gameplay, the visuals, the story, and in the end those ideas just get centralized and designed.”

Masuda-san also mentioned that Game Freak tries to think of Pokémon as real-life animals. This helps the team to design them in a somewhat realistic manner. They will think of what type of food it might eat, where it would live, things like that.

“One thing we always really pay attention to is treating them like living creatures so you have to try and imagine where it would live in the environment and why it looks the way it does, what would it eat? For example. When designing Pokémon, and not just from a graphic design perspective, there must be a reason for why it looks the way it does and you have to think about why it might live in the Pokémon world.”

For more details, be sure to check out the rest of the interview and additional photos over at Game Informer below.
